November 2009

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because I get to spend time with my family doing something we all enjoy–eating. This special holiday also presents opportunities for all of us to carry out some green practices and develop new traditions that are good to the environment.

Here are a few simple tips you can follow to “greenify” your Thanksgiving Day:

  1. Choose local and organic ingredients when possible.
  2. Use real place settings and cloth napkins instead of paper and plastic. If you must use disposable items, choose paper plates and cups instead of plastic.
  3. Reduce, reuse and recycle.
  4. Store leftovers in reusable bowls instead of aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
  5. Celebrate at home. If you must travel, make sure your car is in good working order and your tires are properly inflated.

Now, go out and enjoy your earth friendly Thanksgiving day!

For a lot of girls the ring is THE most important details of their wedding. When I found these beautiful, almost a-work-of-art rings from Simply Wood Rings, I was very excited. The fact that all their wooden wedding rings are made of salvaged wood, such as that from the neck of a violin or from a baseball bat, is just the cherry on top. Check out some of my favorite designs.

Now I’m wondering, how many of you would trade the shiny ring for a more earthy and eco-friendly look? Hmmm! Let me know what you think.

I just stumbled upon the adorable Smitten Sticks™. This fun product was inspired by Edyta Szyszlo from Edyta Szyszlo Photography and created by Vana Chupp of Le Papier Studio.

The talented duo came up with these handmade paper expressions, mustaches and the like for the couple who is planning a unique and fun-filled celebration. They’re simple, playful, and perfect for wedding photo booths, favors, or polaroids.

The cute couple, Chandra and Eric, had calligrapher Bryn Chernoff from Paperfinger create a “Thank you” sign. On their wedding day, they asked photographer Carmen Nauseef of Blink of an Eye Photography to take a few shots of them holding the sign. After the wedding, they chose their favorite photo and used it as the cover of their thank you notes. Clever, huh?

Do me a favor!

How about giving your guests a personal message in a cute little bottle as a favor–like the one from Miniature Rhino? The talented designer will type your message on vintage book paper using a vintage typewriter. Then, the letter will be sealed with a very small bit of red wax and stamped with any letter you’d like. The final touch is a twine tied copper key hand stamped with a custom monogram.

If you’re a DIY bride with some time, talent and patience, this is a project you could definitely take on. This is all you need:

As an alternative to getting the message done, just print it out on your home printer or use a rubber stamp. And voilà, you got yourself a very personal and stylish wedding favor!
